You will be a part of Blue State Digital’s SaaS business, the BSD Tools, our community mobilization and fundraising platform that powers presidential campaigns, enterprise nonprofits, disaster response, and global brands. You’ll be joining a small, cross-functional team, strategically moving our roadmap forward, improving and iterating on a platform that helps hundreds of organizations create impactful digital programs.

The operations team is responsible for infrastructure in the cloud (we use AWS as our primary cloud provider) as well as a small number of physical servers in a data center. We’re constantly improving our platform and introducing modern automation practices and technologies. As we modernize, we prefer managed services (RDS over self-managed MySQL in EC2), distributed architectures, and automation for testing, infrastructure, and deployments. This operations team is responsible for our web servers, queues, and workers services, the multi-tenant database infrastructure, and the infrastructure that powers our mass mailer, the technology that sends 20 billion emails per year on behalf of progressive political organizations, presidential campaigns, and enterprise nonprofits.

  • Build tools, automation, and APIs using technologies like Git, Python, Golang, and various AWS services
  • Instrument infrastructure and services with monitoring, alerting, logging, and distributed tracing tools
  • Provide analyses of our mailer infrastructure and tooling focusing on performance, security, and deliverability metrics
  • Improve performance of the interactions between distributed systems
  • Provide mentorship for more junior members of the team
  • Work with Tech Leads, Product Team members, and stakeholders to plan large technology projects and assess the risks associated with delivering high-value, high-risk products

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  1. 4+ years experience in web operations, devops or software engineering with a strong operational focus
  2. Managed a large-scale, high-traffic highly-available web environment
  3. Worked in a hybrid or fully virtualized or cloud environment and are familiar with the benefits and challenges of virtualization and different PaaS/IaaS vendors (experience directly with Amazon Web Services is a plus)
  4. Automated management of distributed systems using tools for orchestration and configuration management
  5. Experience working on large-scale email platforms is a major plus, specifically, implementing security standards (DKIM, SPF and DMARC), troubleshooting advanced email deliverability issues, experience with open source MTA technologies (Sendmail and Postfix), and having expert knowledge of SMTP, TLS, and DNS
  6. Collaborated effectively across Engineering, Product, QA and Client Services / Support team
  7. Familiarity with modern web infrastructure technologies and design patterns such as log analysis, service-oriented architecture, messaging and queuing
  8. Ability to adapt to new situations, solve problems on the fly, and communicate with those around you
