Pie for Providers is a nationally recognized social enterprise backed by organizations like the University of Chicago and OpenIDEO. We are using technology to help child care providers build stronger businesses. We offer a digital assistant that helps providers navigate government programs so they can increase their revenue and save time. Since our launch, we’ve been featured in Crain’s, AmericanInno, and WGN.

Through software-enabled interventions that streamline child care providers’ administrative work, we are creating the conditions for large scale social change. Our team is passionate about addressing the root causes of poverty and gender inequality. We are committed to building good jobs for child care providers in a changing economy, and helping families access high quality care.

We are looking for a Senior Developer to play a key role in our early stage company. This person will oversee our transition from minimum viable product (MVP) to a full software platform serving a national customer base. This is a unique opportunity to innovate from the ground up and join the management team of a growing startup.

The right candidate is a full-stack generalist with an eye towards the big picture and who is ready to run their own team. You should be able to take a holistic look at our software product and develop a strategy that considers both technical architecture as well as Pie’s business goals. A successful hire may have the opportunity to move into the role of Chief Technical Officer.

Our digital assistant streamlines and automates child care providers’ government compliance. You will accelerate the development of the first usable, intuitive business software for small child care providers. Bringing together best practices from civic technology, early childhood education, fintech, and small business management, you will develop and oversee three key product areas: government subsidies, business expense tracking, and licensing & accreditation. Key features and functionalities are expected to include: text message reminders; attendance; monthly billing reconciliation; a user-friendly application wizard; interactive checklists; receipt reader and monthly expense reports.

Skills and responsibilities

You will work with the COO to continuously iterate on the product roadmap to meet social impact and business goals, including:

  • Driving meaningful and recurring engagement from customers;
  • Ensuring the software is a practical tool for busy, low-income customers;
  • Measurably increasing providers’ revenue and reducing time spent on administration;
  • Helping providers connect and reducing their sense of isolation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting and managing a junior developer and front end developer;
  • Building and executing a product and software development strategy that is compatible with the company’s mission, fundraising plans, and business milestones;
  • Staying informed about best practices for technology for low income customers, compliance management, and child care businesses.
