The Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) at the Morehouse School of Medicine aims to be the leading transformational force for health equity in policy and research. We are building a public data and visualization platform that will shed new light on the impact of political and social determinants of health on the COVID-19 crisis and public health outcomes for communities of color and vulnerable populations.

The Health Equity Tracker will capture and collate data covering COVID-19, public health, demography, policy, politics, sociology, law, and more. Our goal is to improve health outcomes by accelerating the policy research, development, and implementation process with easily accessible data exploration and visualization tools. With your help, the Health Equity Tracker will enable policymakers and the communities they serve to identify health inequities in the U.S., their root causes, and mitigation strategies for improving health outcomes.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help design and build Health Equity Tracker, a public data and visualization platform that will enable new insights into the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color and vulnerable populations.

Skills and responsibilities

In this role, you will lead a small team of engineers to:
• Identify new data sources for the tracker by working across disciplines with the product manager, SHLI leadership, and policymakers
• Build and launch new features to better serve the needs of users
• Ensure that the tracker is usable, accessible, and reliable
• Ensure a successful project handoff from the team

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree; Degree must be from a regionally accredited college or univeristy
• At least 3 years of software development experience
• Experience in Python, Javascript, or any comparable language, such as Java, C/C++, Go, or TypeScript
• Experience managing serverless cloud application infrastructure, such as Google Cloud Run or AWS Lambda
• A commitment to fostering and upholding an inclusive work environment

Preferred qualifications

• Experience leading projects and setting the technical direction
• Experience in one or more of the following:
o Data ingestion pipelines, data analysis, and/or data science; e.g., Python or SQL
o Frontend frameworks, such as React or Angular, as well as HTML and CSS
o Data visualization; e.g., D3 or other visualization libraries
• Experience working with public datasets
• Experience developing a user-facing web app
• Interest and ability to learn other programming languages as needed
