TechEquity Collaborative is a start-up nonprofit based in Oakland California. We envision a world where a growing tech-driven economy creates opportunity for everyone, and where tech-sector employees and companies are engaged and active participants in making our communities better places to live. Our mission is to build a movement of tech workers and companies that will advance this vision. We believe a more engaged tech sector is a more ethical tech sector and that immersing tech workers in the most critical issues where they live results in a more equitable economy for everyone. We focus on two issue areas: housing and workforce & labor.

Reporting to the COO, the SVP will play a key role on the executive leadership team, contributing to overall organizational health, growth, and strategy. The SVP will manage a current team of three that will expand to six by Q4 2020. The SVP has the opportunity to help build this team, and develop the strategies, people, and tools to effectively achieve our organizational goals.

A newly created role, the Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Organizing (SVP) is responsible for expanding our base of tech worker members and deepening their engagement in our efforts to ensure that all Californians have access to economic mobility, housing, and equitable employment opportunities. This role will be a mixture of grassroots organizing, program design, community building, membership experience development, and coalition building. The SVP will also oversee our civic volunteering programs and play a significant role in our regional expansion in the Bay Area and LA.

Skills and responsibilities

This senior-level role is ideal for someone with the following traits:
  • 10-15 years of experience in policy, community organizing, membership organizations, and/or advocacy/campaigns
  • Experience managing teams in mission-driven settings
  • High level of comfort engaging with the tech community
  • Interest and experience in housing policy and/or workforce and labor policy
  • Ability to be based in our Oakland HQ, with ~20% travel around the Bay Area, LA, and Sacramento 
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
  • Owns strategy development and execution for our advocacy and community functions, which are the core area of the organization’s work
  • Manages, coaches, and grows a team to execute on that strategy 
  • Develops our membership model, including market research, testing, and iteration of different approaches for building our base and integrating membership growth as a key priority for all functional areas across the organization
  • Works closely with the Director of Advocacy to advance our advocacy campaigns through events, coalition building, and volunteering opportunities
  • Works with Director of Advocacy in designing and implementing an expanded ladder of engagement allowing our member base to support our campaigns 
  • Works closely with the executive team, and in coordination with other department leads, to ensure our advocacy and membership strategies are delivering on org-wide goals
  • Scopes out opportunities to expand our geographic reach beyond the central Bay Area including building our engagement strategy for San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and exploring an expansion to Southern California

Minimum qualifications

  • Deep and complex understanding of base building, organizing, advocacy, public policy, and/or community building and ability to contribute to the organization’s strategy, credibility, and thought leadership
  • Strong networking skills and ability to engage a relevant community of aligned individuals and organizations on behalf of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with peers in shared efforts; ideally brings experience managing coalitions, multi-organization collaboratives, or learning communities
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills; able to present ideas in an organized and compelling manner 
  • Strong commitment to our equity goals
  • A high level of comfort and experience interacting with members of the tech community
  • Experience supervising a growing team and providing coaching and learning opportunities to junior staff; committed to building transparent, safe, and fun organizational culture
